Displaying brilliant horsemanship and his cool temperament, jockey Y.S. Srinath partnered trainer James McKeown’s 9/2 shot, Adjudicate, to an easy victory in the Indian Turf Invitation Cup, on Sunday in Mysore. More importantly, it being the mare’s back-to-back win, Adjudicate goes into the record books as the only horse to have done so.
Bred at Sohna stud farm and nominated by RCTC, Adjudicate’s victims, in the 14horse big field, included trainer Karthik Ganapathy’s long shot, Juliette (A. Sandesh), a small-made filly but with big heart who, despite taking a circuteous route, was the fastest finishing horse in the final stages of the 2,400m race.
Juliette, however, fell short at the wire by a shade under two lengths while the country’s highest stake money winner, Desert God, was third. Incidentally, Desert Gold is also the winner of the 2016 edition of the race.
The outcome of the race also brought back memories of the sporting rivalry between the two departed souls, D. Khaitan and MAM Ramaswamy as their popular colours — ‘goldred belt and goldbrown belt — flashed passed the winning post.
The 1,600m Maj. P.K. Mehra Memorial Super Mile was also claimed by the RCTC challenger, and McKeown-trained Trafalgar, ridden by David Allan.
