An erratic monsoon, back-to-back Covid-induced lockdowns and the resultant uncertainty
over transport carrying essentials from rural Bengal to urban areas have led to the increase in
the prices of most vegetables in Kolkata markets.

Now, a kilo of most veggies is selling for more than ?50. On Thursday, brinjals touched a
high of ?70 per kilo, bitter gourd ?65, cauliflower ?50 per piece, while ladies finger and
tomato sold for ?50 per kilo.

Vegetable vendors in Kolkata believe that prices are likely to go further up, reported a TV
news channel on Thursday.

A vegetable seller at Gariahat Market in south Kolkata told a TV channel that once the supply
of fresh batch-loads of vegetables from the rural fields gets regularised, prices may reduce.
Else, people have to keep forking out more to get veggies on their table.
