Traditionally, mathematics was considered to be a specialized stream of education and most people considered pursuing conventional career options like engineering, teaching, academic research, etc. Times have changed. • Actuarial Scientist

The role of an actuarial scientist can be challenging. They are responsible for predicting potential risks through the study of statistics, data, probability, and economic policies. They mainly work in the insurance sector and study data related to death, sickness, retirement benefits, mortality, accidents, etc.

Qualification: Bachelor’s degree.

• Data Analyst

A data analyst or research analyst uses statistical tools, analytical, and mathematical calculations to make strategic business decisions. They have good leadership qualities, store and interpret data, learn about market trends, and incorporate decisions in the company.

Qualification: Bachelor’s degree preferably with specialization in statistics or mathematics.

• Operation Research Analyst

Operation research analyst takes part in decision making, determining cost-effectiveness and employee needs, policymaking, and the overall functioning of day-to-day activities of the organization.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.

• Quantitative Economist

Quantitative economists work in different industrial sectors like healthcare, education, government, finance, etc. They look after the proper production and distribution of goods and services and use statistical and mathematical tools to study and analyze economic and financial problems and give necessary advice to organizations.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree at entry level but some organizations may ask for a Master’s degree with a Ph.D.

• Financial Analyst

Financial analysts are individuals who help clients to make and execute financial or investment decisions by evaluating current financial data and by studying the economic trends in the market. They mainly work in banks, securities firms, mutual funds, insurance companies, etc.

Qualifications: Bachelor or a Master’s degree.

• Cryptographers

Cryptography is a highly specialized job and offers cybersecurity services to firms. They create software that protects computers from hacking and also safeguards ATM cards and pin codes. Cryptology is another branch of cryptography where expert cryptographers work in the forensic departments.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in mathematics or computers.

• Meteorologist

Meteorologists forecast weather patterns across the globe. This is a highly lucrative job. They use their analytical and mathematical skills to study satellite and weather reports. They study climate changes and warn the government if there are any forecasts regarding floods, famines, or cyclones.

• Chandigarh University (CU), Chandigar

CU is a NAAC accredited (A+ Grade) university offering 186 courses in 17 streams.

Course: B.Sc. in Actuarial Science.

Duration: 3 years.

Eligibility: 12th pass with mathematics and business mathematics as mandatory subjects.

• IMS or Institute of Management Studies, Kolkata

IMS was founded in 2006 and offers numerous graduates, postgraduate, and professional courses.

Course: M.Sc. in Data Science.

Duration: 2 years.

Eligibility: Graduation and must pass the CET entrance test.

• Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata

ISI, Kolkata founded under the guidance of Professor P.C. Mahalanobis is known for its academic brilliance in the country.

Course:

M.S. in Quantitative Economics.

Duration: 2 years.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in Economics/Statistics/Math/Physics. Individuals with BE or B.Tech. degrees can also apply. Candidates must clear the ISIS entrance test.

Cryptology and Security Research Unit (CSRU) of ISI offers numerous courses in cryptography. It is under the R.C. Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security.

1. One-semester certificate course in cryptology.

2. Summer internships for undergraduate and postgraduate students on cryptology.

• Chartered Institute of Management Accounts (CIMA), Kolkata

CIMA is an established name in the global education sector and is known for its professional and executive courses.

Course: CFA or Chartered Financial Analyst.

Duration: 3 years.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline.

• Institute of Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences, Kolkata

Established in 2002, the Department of Atmospheric Sciences is one of the pioneers in offering various courses in meteorology and atmospheric science in Kolkata.

Course: MSc. in Atmospheric Science.
